The Ipswich Action Group is one of forty local GetUp groups around the nation who regularly meet to work on important issues, like fighting Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton's cruel offshore detention regime.
For too long, hard-right politicians have targeted people seeking asylum and used them as scapegoats for their own failed social and economic policies. They’ve done this by framing the public debate on their terms — leading the media and many of us to use their loaded and misleading language to justify their cruelty.
So we’re partnering with Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to hold a Community Action Workshop on Saturday 28 July. We’ll learn from groundbreaking research by communications expert Anat Shenker-Osorio on how to compassionately and effectively talk about people seeking asylum. Together we can change the language of the debate and win the fight for justice on our terms.
